In memoriam Harold V.J. Linnartz 1965 – 2023: Unlocking the Chemistry of the Heavens

On 31 December 2023 Prof. dr. Harold Linnartz passed away unexpectedly at the age of 58. He leaves behind his wife Helga and their children Anne and Thomas. Linnartz held the Chair for Laboratory Astrophysics at Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, the Netherlands, where he was appointed in 2005. He was a world leader in laboratory studies of gaseous and icy molecules in interstellar space. Linnartz also served as Education Director at Leiden Observatory. He guided with passion the very successful education program in astronomy.

Linnartz was born on October 16, 1965 in Heerlen, in the province of Limburg of The Netherlands, where he finished high school (Gymnasium beta ‘Rolduc’ in Kerkrade) in 1984. He subsequently went to study experimental physics at the University of Nijmegen, where he also did his PhD research following a one year stay in Göttingen. He graduated in 1994 at Nijmegen on the thesis Infrared and Far Infrared Spectroscopy of Transient Species with Prof. dr. J. Reuss as promotor.

In the following decade, Harold Linnartz continued his career abroad, first at Bonn and then for six years at the University of Basel in the group of Prof. dr. John P. Maier, where he also did his Habilitation in 2002. In that period, he developed new laboratory techniques to measure the electronic spectra of gaseous ions and radicals, i.e., transient molecules that react very quickly under Earth-like conditions but can be stable in the vacuum of space. A central theme in Basel was the study of the so-called Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs), a set of (by now) 500 bands that are seen in clouds between the stars at visible wavelengths but that have defied identification for more than a century. Long carbon-chain molecules have been postulated as possible carriers and Harold had a leading role in systematically measuring the spectra of these and other candidate molecules in the laboratory. Solving the DIB mystery continued to be a major theme during his career, also when he moved in 2003 back to the Netherlands to the Vrije Universiteit (VU) at Amsterdam as a senior researcher at the VU Laser Centre and subsequently at Leiden. He kept his close connections with the VU through a special chair for molecular laboratory astrophysics in the 2008-2013 period. One of his last papers was on DIBs as part of the ESO-EDIBLES consortium, conducting an observational survey and highlighting that high resolution optical spectroscopy in space and in the laboratory go hand-in-hand.

After his move to Leiden in 2005, Harold Linnartz became Director of the Leiden Laboratory for Astrophysics. This entailed a broadening of his scientific focus to include, besides gas-phase spectroscopy, also solid-state chemistry and, besides optical, also infrared studies in which the Leiden laboratory was specialized. Thanks to his in-depth expertise in designing, building, and commissioning equipment, the laboratory started soon after his arrival to harvest scientific results from a number of new experiments in ultra-high vacuum surface science.

Stimulated by his passionate leadership, together with excellent postdocs and PhD students, the laboratory was rapidly thriving and became world leading in the study of the chemistry and spectroscopy of interstellar ices under Harold’s leadership. It grew from three to seven set-ups, including also experiments dedicated to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and gas-phase molecules, using state-of-the-art techniques in experimental physics. His overall publication list of more than 260 papers is a testimony to the many excellent results. He became a co-leader of the NWO Dutch Astrochemistry network and highly active internationally in the organization of conferences and workshops, and more generally in steering the interdisciplinary field of laboratory astrophysics worldwide.

When the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) became operational in 2013, observational studies of complex organic molecules in star-forming regions took a new turn. He shifted the laboratory experiments to unraveling the chemistry in ices and how these molecules can form under the coldest conditions when species hardly move on surfaces. Meet and greet was Linnartz’ answer: he and his team showed that reactions between neighboring molecules could take place on cold icy grains and form the sugars, alcohols, aldehydes, and other ingredients of the cosmic cocktail that were being observed with ALMA. Even amino acids, the starting blocks for prebiotic chemistry, could be produced in the laboratory. These cosmic recipes are now an integral part of the latest astrochemical models.

The advent of the James Webb Space Telescope, including the Netherlands’ investment in the MidInfraRed Instrument (MIRI), meant a new challenge for the laboratory: infrared spectroscopy of complex molecules. The databases from the 1990’s are highly incomplete on the types of molecules that JWST could search for. A large number of spectra were collected by his team prior to launch and made publically available through the Leiden Database for Ice, LIDA in 2022, a telephone directory for ices in his words. Harold Linnartz was co-PI on the JWST IceAge program and thoroughly enjoyed the arrival of the first high-quality JWST data. Just last month, the culmination of this work happened with the publication of the first detection of more complex molecules in interstellar ices, demonstrating that they indeed have a solid-state origin. A beautiful synergy between laboratory and observational studies that he was deservedly very proud of.

Harold Linnartz was not only an extremely active researcher but also a great educator who was convinced of the utmost importance of education. He became Director of Education in 2018, a role he was performing with much passion. He shaped the education office into an effective team capable of organizing one of the largest bachelor and master programs in astronomy in the world. The Covid period was challenging, but with Harold’s overview and attention to detail, the education program continued successfully. Moreover, Harold always kept a vivid eye on the interests of individual students: he realized that a University is a big place but that he could play crucial roles in the lives of individual students. Many of them are still grateful for his help.

Harold Linnartz was an excellent and dedicated mentor to his many students, PhD candidates and postdocs. With his warm and engaging personality, he inspired them in many ways and always had good advice and active support, from science and writing of papers to career paths. Accepted papers were celebrated with a famous paper cake, and the annual laboratory outings were a social highlight of the year. Harold had a great sense of humor and was a jovial companion at meetings and during travel. He was also an excellent popular writer with a long string of Dutch and English press releases, radio interviews and newspaper contributions, always with just the right quote. He loved astronomy so much that he shared his passion in regular articles in his local hometown paper about the night sky.

Throughout his illustrious career, Harold Linnartz focused on unlocking the chemistry of the heavens. As a spectroscopist pur sang, shining light on molecules in space was one of his guiding principles. Fathom the behavior of molecules under the extreme conditions of space was another. Harold had many ideas to continue his research in these areas over the coming years, but it is not to be. We will miss him dearly.

Professor Linnartz was an incredibly kind and passionate person who I only interacted with a couple times through my PhD but his kindness and genuine interest in the sciences, all sciences, was memorable. I know his students were his biggest priority, and this is a huge loss to the scientific community. It is comforting to know he will live on in the incredible research he has began and in the hearts of all who met him.

The news of Harold's passing caught me off guard and has tainted these first days of the year with sadness.

Harold took me into his lab in my Master Studies. The first thing he did was to give me an hour long warning on the dangers of the lab. He was fully commited first, to people's safety. He was a great supervisor, kind and supportive. I will miss the cake meetings in his office where he would share stories that would make us all laugh. Until this date he has helped me with my carreer. We have all lost a great mentor, a great scientist and a great person.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I was terribly shocked and saddened to hear of Harold's death. I was a post doc in Basel while Harold's was completing his habilitation in 2002 and remember our many lunches together and a long train trip to the Prague meeting with several students in tow. Harold was a warm, generous man who supported everyone around him. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

My deepest condolences go to Harold’s family, Helga, Anne and Thomas, his mother, and friends. If there is anything I can do for you, please, don’t hesitate to reach out.
I received Harold’s last email on Christmas day. He personally wished me and my family all the best for the festive season and the new year. Now this new year feels much empty knowing that he is not with us anymore. We met for the first time during the summer of 2006 for my PhD interview. At that time, my English was not that great, and I understood little of what he told me, but I still got the job. Since then, Harold has been the best mentor I could ever dream of having, a true friend, and my scientific father. During his speech at my PhD defense, he told me that from that moment onward I would have to keep climbing high mountains to achieve my dreams and that the height is not as important as the route that I would choose. He has always been there for me throughout that journey, and I will forever miss him greatly.
Harold’s leadership, kindness, and generosity built an incredible team of successful people, made of all the PhD students and postdocs that worked in his group in the past twenty years. Many of them are now some of my dearest friends. Harold left us all too early, but I know his legacy will continue. Ciao amico mio.

It is with immense sorrow that we learn of this devastating news. Harold's depth of scientific knowledge was matched only by the tranquility he exuded, a rare and invaluable presence in our tumultuous world. My initial encounter with Harold occurred in 2009 during my time as the Greenberg Fellow in Leiden, an opportunity graciously facilitated by Harold, for which I will remain eternally thankful. Our collective sentiments are extended to Harold's family and friends during this trying time. Harold, your contributions have touched countless lives, and we express our deepest gratitude for the profound impact you've made.

When I first came to the Netherlands as a German PostDoc, I knew very little about the Dutch way of life. I always assumed it would be similar, but I was immediately proven wrong when I met Harold for the first time. He met me with so much warmth and kindness, I felt at home even though I was hundreds of kilometers away from my parents. Some of that can surely be attributed to his jokes he liked to make about the German train services that put a smile on my face and that I will always cherish.
In his group we were like a family, and whether experiments failed or succeeded, we shared these experiences as equals. He always managed to find solutions to the most difficult problems and the compromises he made left no one behind.
Through his guidance I was able to think about what I want in my professional and private life. He put my capabilities in perspective and showed me that believing in myself is the key to achieving success.
I’m incredibly grateful that I had the chance to meet Harold. He made me a better person and scientist and he will always be a role model that I will strive to be. My deepest condolences to his family and strength during these difficult times.

Learning of Harold’s passing is devastating and shocking. I first met Harold right when starting my PhD back in 2017. As a very involved PI of the EUROPAH consortium consisting of 16 PhD students, Harold was a role model with his brilliant scientific thinking and provided us with invaluable guidance on our journeys through academia and the complex and interdisciplinary field that is astrochemistry. During my time at InterCat, I had the pleasure to work more closely with Harold and to meet with him regularly. He was so kind in all these scientific discussions - and of course always had something smart and useful to contribute - and was just overall an encouraging mentor for us younger scientists. Thank you so much for this, Harold! Your passing is a great loss to the astrochemistry community.

My deepest condolences to Harold’s family and all my sympathy to our friends and colleagues in Leiden during this time of sorrow.

I was so looking forward to hosting Harold in San Antonio, January 17-19 2024, to proudly show him the success I obtained in recently getting a full-time position in astrochemistry, largely because of Harold.

I will never forget my interview with Harold for a PhD position in his group. Before being his student, I attempted a PhD in astrochemistry in another institute and was kicked out after 1 year. I went into industry after that, but wanted to go back into astrochemistry. PhD programs didn't want me, and when Harold was interviewing me, I was ready for the typical "what happened at your previous PhD?". But no, unlike everyone else, he didn't ask that question. Instead he asked "I saw you tried academia and industry, which one did you like more?" and I said "academia" and he said "good" and smiled.

From that small nuanced conversation, I knew I would be in good hands, and that gave me the confidence to do my PhD (again) in a foreign country. Harold's 100% support in me allowed me to flourish in some of the best years of my life.

When my father died at 58, you acknowledged at my thesis defense that he would have been so proud of me. I am heavily thinking of your family during this time. I have considered you as my "science dad", as many of us do, and we will continue to carry on your astrochemistry legacy of unlocking the chemistry of the heavens.

What a loss. Harold was an exemplary scientist: rigorous, imaginative, insightful and an original thinker. However, whenever we met, what stood out were his human qualities: enthusiasm, kindness, empathy and genuine excitement for new science and experiments. He provided us with numerous insights and help during our collaborative projects, and always had time to talk and listen. He will be missed both as a colleague and a friend.
With sincere condolences to Harold's family and friends.

My deep condolences to Harold’s family and colleagues. In the early days of Nijmegen astronomy - during the nineties - Harold has put his dedicated efforts in support of Nijmegen astrophysics at various levels. I first came to know Harold and his characteristic enthusiasm when he was following the astrophysics lectures. Initially as a teaching assistant for astrophysics and later as a PhD student in the Department of Molecular and Laser Physics he guided students carrying out inspiring projects with the optical telescope, the usage of the CCD camera and he played a big role in astronomy outreach in Nijmegen as well. It has been wonderful to see how his thorough training in molecular physics at Nijmegen and his love for astronomy came to flourish abroad and at Leiden Observatory, which now has sadly come to a sudden end.

Harold was a phenomenal scientist but entirely devoid of any arrogance or self-importance. Instead of trying to sound far superior in knowledge and understanding - which in many instances he probably was - he had a natural concern to identify the fundamental, key point and tell it in as simple and few words as possible. This made hard problems sound trivial. He could look behind the curtain and see what others could not. But he also listened and never made anyone feel inadequate even if he pointed out flaws in their reasoning - he was the kindest person and all about working together to make something positive happen. My (current) University's founding mission statement is "For the pursuit of knowledge in the company of friends" - this was not long before Harold was born and times have changed enormously (science has become very competitive and nasty at times) but it is exactly how Harold too thought science could be done and how he did it. He will live forth in our memories and be always that insightful trusted friend on our shoulder, whispering clever advice into our ears.

By receiving this heartbreaking news, a profound sense of loss involves all of us. Harold was a heartwarming and caring supervisor, always armed with a story or a lighthearted joke to uplift us during difficult moments.
I will be always thankful for his belief in me back in 2017, when he saw potential in that brazilian girl with broken English to pursue a PhD under his mentorship. His guidance, patience, care, and encouragement were invaluable. In the lab, Harold’s dedication to cultivating a positive group spirit was clear in the many paper cakes and lab days out, which filled us with good memories. His absence is deeply felt by the research group, not only for his scientific contribution to astrochemistry but also for the genuinely kind person that he was.

I will always have the kind memory of our last encounter. It was in November 2023, six months after my PhD defense. I passed by his office and I could see the genuine happiness in his eyes while I updated him about my new job and future family plans. At that moment, he resembled a proud father welcoming his child home for an unexpected visit, and I can’t express enough how much that was meaningful to me.

My deepest thoughts and condolences go to Harold's family. The pain of his loss is enormous, and I can only hope that the shared memories and appreciation for Harold's kindness from the worldwide scientific community bring you comfort, even if small. I wish you all the strength during this difficult time.

Harold.

And probably my dutch does not do you justice. Always calm, considered, quietly listening and then finding the strong argument, consolatory path and inclusive way to work a challenge out, you are warmly respected by us all - and your knowledge, prolific publications across astrochemistry in gas phase and more recently solid state, have changed a field.

Today I think most importantly of your family, your wife and children most keenly, who will know you better than any of us, but like us all benefitted form your guidance, good nature, kind smile and time and calmness. I wish you Harold peace wherever you now are, and hope in some tiny way the love your scientific community shares for you can comfort your family. Personally I was shocked and devastated by this news, you have left us far too soon and with so much to do, and we promise to continue your hard work in the days weeks and years to come. Rest in Peace Harold.

Sterkte.
